The Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena) is a near threatened species of Hyena living in Africa and the Middle East. Despite its overall classification globally, in most countries the local populations are already threatened due to habitat loss, persecution, and hunting for their fur and body parts.
With powerful jaws that allow it to consume tough animal carcasses and a specialized digestive system that can process bone and other indigestible materials, the animal plays a vital role in its ecosystem.

Striped Hyenas can be surprisingly tame if raised from a cub. Though they are a more rare exhibit animal, their conservation is promoted in European Zoos. Breeding is supported by the EAZA Ex-situ Programme.

Here’s a great mini documentary about them. Take ten minutes, have a coffee, and learn about these beautiful creatures:

Why am I talking about Hyenas on my Website? Because Striped Hyenas are beautiful animals, and many people don’t even know they exist. Now you do. These wonderful beasts deserve being protected. Spread the message!
